Where to look

Look in the beech and chestnut forests on the slopes above Borgotaro, Albareto and Bedonia. Summer cep appears as early as June in oak and chestnut, and cep in autumn in beech. Many forests are signed reserves of the common-land bodies (Comunalie), so check the signs before entering.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), bronze bolete (borowik ciemnobrązowy), summer cep (borowik usiatkowany), pine bolete (borowik sosnowy), chanterelle (kurka)

Forest: beech, chestnut and oak forest in the Parma Apennines

Season: June–October; peak in September and October.

Rules

In Emilia-Romagna you need a paid permit (tesserino), daily, weekly or seasonal, with prices set each year by the local authorities. The limit is 3 kg per person per day, and picking is allowed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The fine for picking without a permit is 25–154 euro, and on signed Comunalie land only entitled people or holders of their own permits may pick.

About the forest

Borgo Val di Taro in the Parma Apennines is home to Fungo di Borgotaro PGI, the first mushroom in Europe with a protected geographical indication. Four bolete species from the forests of the Taro and Ceno valleys are sold under the name. Beech and chestnut slopes give boletes from early summer.
