Where to look

Look for slippery jacks in autumn in the needle litter under plantation pines around El Bolsón and Lago Puelo. Morels grow in spring in Patagonian cypress forest and on burns. The native forests have few well-known edible species, so pick only what you can identify with certainty.

What grows here

slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), morel (smardz), saffron milk cap (rydz), Jersey cow mushroom (maślak sitarz), parasol (czubajka kania)

Forest: ponderosa and lodgepole pine plantations, native southern beech and cypress forest

Season: March–June for slippery jacks; September–November for morels.

Rules

The pine plantations are mostly private land, so pick with the owner's permission. In national parks such as Lago Puelo and Nahuel Huapi picking is banned without a permit from the National Parks Administration (Administración de Parques Nacionales). I did not find rules on limits, so ask at the local tourist office or the province.

About the forest

El Bolsón in the Comarca Andina, at the foot of the Andes, is surrounded by pine plantations and native Patagonian forest. Slippery jacks from the plantations are so common that they end up in local cooking and at markets. In spring morels grow in the forest and on burns.
