Where to look

Look in oak and beech west of the town, towards the Pindus, along forest roads. Caesar's mushroom and boletes grow in warm oak woods, cep higher up in beech and pine. Autumn group forays usually start at the Mushroom Park in Grevena.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), Caesar's mushroom (muchomor cesarski), chanterelle (kurka), saffron milk cap (rydz), morel (smardz)

Forest: oak, beech and black pine forest on the slopes of the Pindus

Season: September–November; morels in spring, Caesar's mushroom in summer.

Rules

Greek forests are mostly state land managed by forestry offices (dasarchio), and picking for sale needs a licence. I could not confirm how much you may pick without a licence for your own use, so ask the forestry office in Grevena. The core of Northern Pindos National Park (Valia Calda) has strict restrictions.

About the forest

Grevena in Western Macedonia is known as the mushroom capital of Greece, with a mushroom park in town and a yearly mushroom festival. Oak, beech and pine forest on the slopes of the Pindus gives boletes, chanterelles and Caesar's mushrooms. Local mushroom enthusiasts run group forays.
