Where to look

Look for morels in spring on forest edges by meadows and on burn sites, and for chanterelles in summer in damp, shady forest under birch, maple and oak. Giant puffballs grow in meadows and open woods. Take no more than about 10% of the mushrooms in one patch.

What grows here

morel (smardz), golden chanterelle (kurka), giant puffball (purchawica olbrzymia), chicken of the woods (żółciak siarkowy), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty)

Forest: mixed maple, birch and pine forest on the Canadian Shield

Season: May–June for morels; July–October for chanterelles.

Rules

Picking mushrooms in Ontario provincial parks is illegal. On Crown land you may pick only where the Crown Land Use Policy Atlas allows food gathering. Most nature reserves, conservation areas and county forests ban picking, and on private land you need the owner's consent.

About the forest

The area around North Bay on Lake Nipissing is the gateway to northeastern Ontario, with mixed forest on the rock of the Canadian Shield. Morels grow here in spring, and chanterelles and puffballs in summer and autumn. A local foraging group runs workshops and outings.
