Look in the chestnut and beech above Montemignaio, Raggiolo and Castel San Niccolò. Summer cep and Caesar's mushroom grow in summer under chestnut and oak, cep in autumn in beech. In signed, productive chestnut groves picking is banned from September to October.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), summer cep (borowik usiatkowany), Caesar's mushroom (muchomor cesarski), chanterelle (kurka), bronze bolete (borowik ciemnobrązowy)
Forest: chestnut and beech forest above the Casentino valley
Season: June–November; peak in September and October.
Rules
Tuscany requires a paid permit: non-residents pay 15 euro for a day, 40 euro for a week or 100 euro for a year, and carry the payment receipt with their details. The limit is 3 kg per person per day, picking from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, and fines are 40–240 euro. The Casentino Forests National Park needs its own annual park permit (65 euro for non-residents), and picking there is allowed only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
About the forest
Pratomagno is the ridge that separates the Casentino valley from the Valdarno in Tuscany. Chestnut covers the slopes, with beech higher up, giving boletes from early summer. On the other side of the valley is the Casentino Forests National Park, which has its own permits.
