Sea Glass Rules: Where Collecting Is Banned

By Paweł. Updated 2026-10-30.

In law, glass on the beach is usually litter, so in most places you may pick it up. But some beaches have turned their sea glass into an attraction and protect it. Other rules are about the ground you walk on rather than the glass itself.

Poland

On an ordinary Baltic beach you can collect sea glass freely. Just watch where you walk:

Glass Beach in Fort Bragg: look only

The world’s best-known sea glass beach is in California. From 1949 to 1967 residents threw their rubbish straight onto the shore there. Since 2002 the site has been part of MacKerricher State Park. The glass on the park beach is for looking at only, and rangers ask visitors to leave it in place.

The reason is simple: in summer more than a thousand people a day visit, and most take something. The glass is dwindling, and in 2012 the city council rejected the idea of topping it up. That is why Glass Beach is marked “look only” on our map.

Praia dos Cristais in Laxe

In Galicia there is a cove where residents dumped bottles for years. Today it is covered in coloured sea glass. Signs ask visitors not to take it, and the mayor has promised more patrols. We found no formal ban, but the local rule is clear. Praia dos Cristais is also “look only” on our map.

Other places with restrictions

On German beaches, especially on Usedom and in Schleswig-Holstein, the sea sometimes washes up white phosphorus from Second World War bombs. It looks like a yellow pebble or amber and ignites by itself once dry. Never pick up or pocket a suspicious lump.

What next

If you are thinking of selling sea glass, read value and selling. When to go to the beach is covered in when to look for sea glass.
