See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look for wild garlic in damp beech woods on the valley floors around Pottenstein, checking every leaf. You will find wild thyme, wild marjoram and juniper on sunny slopes, but only outside reserves. Elder, nettle and garlic mustard grow along paths and at the edge of villages.
What grows here
wild garlic (ramsons), wild thyme (breckland thyme), wild marjoram (oregano), common juniper, dog rose (rosehip), yarrow, elder (elderflower, elderberry), stinging nettle, garlic mustard, white dead-nettle, dandelion, wild strawberry
Habitats: limestone valleys with rocks, beech woods with wild garlic, juniper heath and warm grassland on the slopes
Rules
The handful rule of § 39(3) BNatSchG applies: small amounts for personal use, picked with care and without uprooting. Many juniper grasslands are nature reserves (Naturschutzgebiet) where picking plants is banned, so read the signs. Picking for sale, wild garlic included, needs a permit from the nature conservation authority (§ 39(4)).
About the place
Franconian Switzerland is a limestone upland with valleys, rocks and caves between Bamberg, Bayreuth and Nuremberg. In spring wild garlic carpets the beech woods in the valleys, and in summer wild thyme and wild marjoram flower on the slopes. Sheep-grazed grassland with juniper (Wacholderheiden) is typical.
