Matsutake grows under Japanese red pine on ridges and dry slopes, hidden under the litter. The simplest legal way in is a paid matsutake outing (matsutake-gari) run by hill owners. Other mushrooms, such as larch boletes under larch, grow in forests higher up the Central and Southern Alps.
What grows here
matsutake (matsutake), larch bolete (maślak żółty), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa), oyster mushroom (boczniak ostrygowaty), hen of the woods / maitake (żagwica listkowata)
Forest: Japanese red pine on dry ridges, mixed and broadleaf forest
Season: September–October for matsutake; other mushrooms from June to November.
Rules
Most matsutake forest is private or community land, often roped off and signed no entry (入山禁止), with picking rights leased out. Taking mushrooms from someone else's forest is forest theft under Article 197 of the Forest Act, punishable by up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to 300,000 yen. Do not pick anything without the owner's clear permission.
About the forest
The Ina Valley in Nagano Prefecture is one of the main matsutake areas in Japan, and Nagano has long been the top producing prefecture. Matsutake grows with Japanese red pine on dry, poor ridges. Pine wilt disease, caused by a nematode, has cut harvests sharply across Japan.
