Look in public forests such as the forêt de la Bessède near Belvès, the forêt de Barade or the Sarlat-Campagnac communal forest. Boletes grow under oak and chestnut after warm rain in late summer and autumn. The mushroom markets in Villefranche-du-Périgord and Monpazier show what is growing.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), bronze bolete (borowik ciemnobrązowy), summer cep (borowik usiatkowany), chanterelle (kurka), parasol (czubajka kania)
Forest: oak and chestnut forest with pine on limestone plateaus
Season: September–November; peak in October, also in summer after thunderstorms.
Rules
In France mushrooms belong to the landowner, and about 99% of the forest in Dordogne is private, where picking without consent is theft. In public forests picking for your own use is tolerated, usually up to 5 litres per person per day, and illegal picking brings a 135 euro fine, or a criminal case above 10 litres. Local orders (arrêtés) can limit days and amounts, so check with the mairie.
About the forest
Périgord, in the Dordogne department, is one of the best known cep regions in France, famous for its autumn mushroom markets. Oak and chestnut forest covers the limestone plateaus. Almost all the forest in the department is private.
